The Challenge
Designing for Pristem came with unique challenges, including the difficulty of reaching remote users to understand their real-world constraints. The process also involved deep research into existing x-ray devices and interfaces, while navigating the technical nuances of radiography and adapting to the realities of rural, low-resource environments.
The XD Process
The experience design process for Pristem centered on in-depth user research with radiography professionals across the globe. We conducted interviews with radiographers, radiologists, and support staff in diverse settings - from hospitals to remote clinics - with some sessions even held via WhatsApp due to limited connectivity, including with a radiographer in rural Mali. The research aimed to understand their daily workflows, pain points, and priorities, highlighting real opportunities to improve usability in challenging environments.
Usability testing played a key role in shaping both the interface and the broader device experience. Alongside testing the digital interface, we participated in human factors evaluations of the x-ray machine in simulated environments with real users. These sessions uncovered critical usability issues, ranging from navigation to physical interaction, that informed multiple rounds of design improvements and refinements.
“ Working with YU transformed our approach. Their collaborative process with our team and the communities we serve resulted in solutions that truly make a difference. They brought creativity, insight, and a deep understanding of our mission, all while prioritizing inclusivity and sustainability. Thanks to their research-driven design, our platform now better meets the needs of our users."

The Outcomes
This long-term collaboration resulted in a wide range of in-depth design deliverables, including detailed personas, user journeys, and interface prototypes. The insights gained throughout the process enabled us to design a tailored interface that significantly streamlined radiographers’ workflows—ultimately improving both operational efficiency and the overall patient experience.
